After 3 Nights, "Downs After Dark" Proves to be Successful

clock July 5, 2009 11:44 by author cfhowley

Last Thursday night was the third and final "Downs After Dark" of the season, a trio of night races hosted at Churchill Downs. With the recent troubles of the Horse Racing industry in Kentucky and with a failed attempt to add slot machines to raise revenue, it seems that night racing is just what Churchill Downs needed. Over the course of 3 night races that began on June 19th, "Downs After Dark" has drawn almost 90,000 spectators in an almost Derby-like atmosphere. The conclusion on Thursday alone drew the biggest crowd Churchill Downs has ever seen outside of the Derby, Oaks and Breeders Cup with over 33,000 visitors. The large crowds were helped with much milder weather compared the steamy weather that fans experienced during the previous nights.

The final night included more than just horse racing. On the eve of the 4th of July weekend, the paddock area was decorated in festive red, white and blue and featured a laser light show to concluded the amazing evening. All military personnel were able to enjoy the night free of charge and one member took his final oath of re-enlistment in the winners circle earlier in the night.

The first "Kids Night Out" event was also a success as it gave parents the chance to come out and enjoy the night without having to find a babysitter. Teaming with Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby Museum offered child care services that featured pony rides and other entertainment for only $25 per child.

While there were a few problems handling the unexpected turnout the first night, Churchill Downs had adjusted accordingly the following two nights on June 26th and July 2nd and night racing has been a big success that will surely return for the fall meet.

Churchill Downs Draws Big Crowds "After Dark"

clock June 22, 2009 13:51 by author cfhowley

Last Friday, for the first time in track history, Church Downs turned on the lights and hosted an evening of night racing. Downs after Dark turned out to be a huge success for the troubling Churchill Downs as roughly 28,000 spectators came out to endure the 90 degree heat and the long concession lines to take in the Derby-like atmosphere. While the long concession lines were an issue that they will need to work on for future night races, the night overall drew more than twice as many people as they were hoping for and even brought in more fans than a couple of Major League Ballparks.

The night featured 11 races on the card with the first post at 6pm. It took seven races before the "after dark" finally kicked in but it was well worth the wait as the crowd screamed in excitement when Robby Albarado rode favorite Final Copy to a win in the first ever race under the lights in the 8th race. The historic event concluded late into the night after 3 more posts and while there were a couple of hiccups, Downs After Dark may be just what Churchill needs to get back on its feet.

If you missed the first ever "Downs After Dark", Churchill Downs will be hosting two more night races on Friday June 26th and Thursday July 2nd. Gates open at 4pm with the first post at 6pm. Admission is $6.

Workouts for the Belmont Continue

clock May 25, 2009 02:48 by author cfhowley

Today at Churchill Downs, the two biggest names in thoroughbred racing worked out in Louisville Kentucky. Derby winner Mine That Bird and Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra both took to the wet track Monday morning.

Monday was the first workout for the filly and the long-shot Derby winner since the Preakness when Rachel Alexandra held off a charging Mine That Bird at Pimlico. Rachel turned in a time of 50.2 seconds in the 4 furlong breeze during the workout while being ridden by exercise rider Dominic Terry. Calvin Borel was once again on top of his Derby winner Mine That Bird as the 3 year old cruised will a time of 51 seconds. Rachel's Belmont run is still in question as co-owner Jess Jackson will not make a decision on whether Rachel will try and be the first filly to win two Triple Crowns races until next week. At that time, Calvin Borel will also have to make a big decision on which winning horse he will be mounting on June 8th.

Two days earlier, other Belmont contenders worked out with hopes of taking the final Triple Crown race away from the two front runners. Charitable Man went 47.88 seconds at 4 furlongs at Belmont on Saturday, trying to make it his 4th straight win on dirt. Summer Bird (7 furlongs, 1:26.47) and Derby runner Dunkirk (5 furlongs, 1:00.77) also ran in Belmont while Nowhere to Hide breezed to 4 furlong in 49.84 seconds during his work out at Saratoga.

Calvin Borel does it again at the Preakness

clock May 17, 2009 10:07 by author cfhowley

Calvin Borel is sitting on top of the world right now after an amazing 2+ weeks. What a ride it has been, and its still not over yet. Only about a month ago, Calvin had to settle for mounting Mine That Bird, a long shot with almost no chance of winning the Kentucky Derby, because he was not able to secure a better ride. Good thing for Borel that he wasn't able to find a better horse because that "long shot" took him to the winners circle at Churchill Downs 2 weeks ago. The win made him an instant celebrity, appearing on NBC's Today Show and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

The day before the Derby, Calvin rode Rachel Alexandra to a blow out win at the Kentucky Oaks making it 2 out of 2 in Louisville Kentucky. The days following produced drama in the racing world when Rachel was sold to a new owner who instantly entered the filly into the Preakness. While many were not happy with the decision to run the filly alongside the colts, Calvin jumped at the chance to ride "the best horse he has ever ridden" and what a great decision it was.

Calvin's choice to switch rides paid off as he rode his Oaks winner to another win, this time at the Preakness Stakes in Pimlico. The win by Rachel Alexandra marks the first time a female has won the Preakness in 85 years and gave Calvin yet another win to his record. Is there any stopping the 42 year old jockey from St Martin Lousiana? There doesn't seem to be. On Thusday, Calvin won his 900th win while riding War Eagle Lady and only one after winning the Preakness, he was back at Churchill Downs riding Sun Button to a win in the fourth race.

Our congratulations go out to Calvin Borel and Rachel Alexandra, not to mention Mine That Bird who had a strong race coming in second at Pimlico. It should be an interesting days and weeks to come to see what will happen leading up to the Belmont Stakes.

New Jockey Set to Ride "Mine That Bird" at the Preakness

clock May 12, 2009 11:42 by author cfhowley

Mine That Bird owners,  Mark Allen and Leonard Blach, have named a new jockey to ride his Kentucky Derby winning thoroughbred. After riding the 50-1 long shot to a thrilling victory at Churchill Downs last Saturday, Calvin Borel jumped at the chance to ride his Kentucky Oaks winning filly, Rachel Alexandra. This left the Roswell New Mexico based Double Eagle Ranch looking for a new jockey to ride the 3yo Bay Gelding in the second leg of the Triple Crown.

The owners today named fellow New Mexico native Mike Smith as the new jockey for Mine that Bird this weekend at the 134th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. The Hall of Fame Jockey knows all to well what it feels like to ride a 50-1 long shot. In 2005, Mike Smith rode Giacomo to the winners circle at Churchill Downs in Kentucky Derby 131.
