Calvin Borel Wins 3rd Kentucky Derby with Super Saver

clock May 1, 2010 17:23 by author cfhowley

A forecast of heavy rain and flooding did not dampen the excitement that happened on a sloppy track at Churchill Down for Kentucky Derby 136. For the third time in the last four years, local favorite Calvin Borel won the first leg of the Triple Crown aboard Super Saver. Borel's other two wins happened in 2007 with Street Sense and last year with Mine That Bird

Even after trainer Todd Pletcher's lost his best horse, Eskendereya, earlier in the week with an issue with is front left leg, he still had 4 chances to win with Devil May Care, Discreetly Mine, Mission Impazable and Super Saver.  The win by Super Saver gave Pletcher his first Kentucky Derby win.

Second place went to Nick Zito's horse Ice Box and third went to Paddy O'Prado while favorite Lookin at Lucky finish toward the back of the field.

Zenyatta Remains Unbeating in Breeders Cup Win

clock November 8, 2009 15:38 by author cfhowley

Yesterday was a great day in Southern California as the richest day in horse racing took to Santa Anita Park for the 5 million dollar Breeders Cup Classic. The day belonged to the unbeaten mare, Zenyatta. Coming into the race, she had won all 13 of her races with 5 of those wins coming this year. Saturdays Breeders Cup was no exception as she beat all the males to improve her record to 14-0 over her famed career.

The race did not get off to a smooth start as Quality Road acted up while trying to enter the 12th starting gate.  After being blind folding in a last attempt to get the Florida Derby winner into the gate, Quality Road began bucking and kicking and nearly broke free down the track when they opened the front gate to entice him into the gate. To the disappointment of trainer Todd Pletcher, Quality Road had to scratch from the race when they found minor cuts on his legs due to the incident.

While inspecting Quality Road, the remaining field had to be backed out of the gates after the 5 minute long delay. Once the horses had entered the gates for a second time, the race was off. It didn’t look good for the favorite Zenyatta as she broke from the starting gate on the wrong foot and quickly fell to the back of field, only beating the Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird coming around the first turn.  But in the end, Zenyatta, being guided by Jockey Mike Smith, took the top prize and became the first female horse to win the Breeders Cup Classic.

Now there is only one question still remaining, who wins Horse of the Year? While Zenyatta made a strong case for the prize, Rachael Alexandra was the favorite going 8 for 8 this year with a victory against the boys in the Preakness Stakes. One thing we can count on is that this year’s Horse of the Year will be a female.

After 3 Nights, "Downs After Dark" Proves to be Successful

clock July 5, 2009 11:44 by author cfhowley

Last Thursday night was the third and final "Downs After Dark" of the season, a trio of night races hosted at Churchill Downs. With the recent troubles of the Horse Racing industry in Kentucky and with a failed attempt to add slot machines to raise revenue, it seems that night racing is just what Churchill Downs needed. Over the course of 3 night races that began on June 19th, "Downs After Dark" has drawn almost 90,000 spectators in an almost Derby-like atmosphere. The conclusion on Thursday alone drew the biggest crowd Churchill Downs has ever seen outside of the Derby, Oaks and Breeders Cup with over 33,000 visitors. The large crowds were helped with much milder weather compared the steamy weather that fans experienced during the previous nights.

The final night included more than just horse racing. On the eve of the 4th of July weekend, the paddock area was decorated in festive red, white and blue and featured a laser light show to concluded the amazing evening. All military personnel were able to enjoy the night free of charge and one member took his final oath of re-enlistment in the winners circle earlier in the night.

The first "Kids Night Out" event was also a success as it gave parents the chance to come out and enjoy the night without having to find a babysitter. Teaming with Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Derby Museum offered child care services that featured pony rides and other entertainment for only $25 per child.

While there were a few problems handling the unexpected turnout the first night, Churchill Downs had adjusted accordingly the following two nights on June 26th and July 2nd and night racing has been a big success that will surely return for the fall meet.
